New banners for the seven volleyball national championships won by the University of Hawaii at Hilo were swaying in the rafters of the UHH gymnasium as members from those teams returned for the annual Alumni game.
Also returning was their coach Sharon Peterson, who will be inducted into the Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 4.
When the athletic complex was hit by the one-in-a-hundred-year-rain in the early part of the decade, the gym was flooded. The banners were removed as the gym was repainted and resurfaced due to water damage. This past summer the gym saw similar attention as the roof was replaced, walls repainted and the floor refinished.
It was an appropriate time to create new banners and share the tradition that started in the 70s.
As for the match, the Vulcans beat the Alumni 25-16, 25-17 and 25-23.
